Edit with Christmas Magic Photo Overlays
Together, we’ll explore what photo overlays are and how you can use them in your creative editing workflow. We’ll look at different types of overlays, how to use them in Adobe Photoshop, Zoner, or even on your phone, and I’ll show you how photo overlays can help you achieve truly stunning results.
1. What Are Photo Overlays?
Photo overlays are essentially graphic images, effects, or textures that you add to a photo as an extra layer using editing software. They’re used to create a specific mood, enhance the composition, or add visual interest to an image.
The goal is to bring something extra into your photograph—something that boosts its visual appeal and helps highlight your unique style as a creator.

2. Types of Photo Overlays
JPG Files with a Black Background
All overlays that include light effects—such as sun rays, stars, bokeh, Christmas lights, sparklers, fireworks, prism effects, or so-called light leaks—come as JPG files with a black background. This isn’t a mistake; it’s simply a technical requirement when creating these types of effects.
But don’t worry—removing the black background is very easy. In your editing software, all you need to do is change the layer blending mode to Screen, and the black background will instantly disappear.

PNG Files with a Transparent Background
Other elements—such as flowers, trees, bubbles, or falling leaves—can usually be created on a transparent background, which makes them even easier to use. There’s no need to change the layer blending mode. Simply drag the overlay into your photo and adjust its position, and if needed, add a bit of blur so the final image looks natural and cohesive.
3. What Are the Benefits of Photo Overlays?
Fast and Easy to Use
Photo overlays significantly simplify and speed up your editing workflow—you don’t have to create everything from scratch. They also free you from waiting for the right outdoor conditions. For example, you don’t have to wait for it to start snowing to add a winter atmosphere to your photos.

Flexibility
There’s a wide range of photo overlays available, which means you can experiment with different effects and easily tailor them to your individual needs and creative preferences.
4. How Do You Use Photo Overlays?
You add photo overlays to your images using editing software that supports layers and different blending modes. Some of the most commonly used programs include Adobe Photoshop (CS & CC), Photoshop Elements, or Affinity Photo.
Overlays with a transparent background can also be added in Canva.
Unfortunately, Adobe Lightroom isn’t sufficient for this—it doesn’t allow you to add elements on separate layers. The good news is that you can easily use overlays on your phone as well, thanks to the free app Adobe Express.
Using Photo Overlays in Adobe Photoshop
In Photoshop, open the photo you want to apply the overlay to. Then simply drag and drop the selected overlay into your image and press Enter. If the overlay has a black background, set the layer’s blending mode to Screen—the black background will disappear instantly.
After that, you can adjust the overlay’s position, size, and, if needed, fine-tune the brightness and contrast so the effect blends naturally with your photo.
